Here is a breakdown of how the Pirates players and prospects played in winter ball this week from 11/8-11/15:
Mexican League
Vedados de Mazatlan
- Outfielder Rogelio Noris appeared in three games this week where he went 0-for-4 with a strikeout. Noris is batting .156 with three runs, two doubles, one home run, six RBI and two stolen bases over 13 games with Mazatlan.
Venezuelan League
Aguilas del Zulia
- Right-hander Diego Moreno appeared in one game this week with Zulia. He tossed a perfect inning of relief with two strikeouts. Over 5.1 innings in relief, Moreno has allowed three runs on five hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
- Right-hander Julio Vivas is on the roster for Aguilas but has not yet made an appearance.
Tigers de Aragua
- Shortstop Ronny Cedeno made his winter ball debut this week for Aragua. He played in three games, going 6-for-15 (.400 avg) with three runs, a triple, a home run, six RBI and a walk.
Caribes de Anzoátegui
- Right-hander Gabriel Alvarado has not yet made an appearance for Anzoátegui. Outfielder Gorkys Hernandez played in six games this week for Caribes. He went 6-for-17 (.353 avg) with three runs, a double, RBI, two walks and four stolen bases. In 27 games overall, Hernandez is batting .250.
- Outfielder Jose Tabata is on the roster for Anzoátegui but has not played in a game yet.
Bravos de Margarita
- Right-hander Anthony Claggett did not appear in any games this week for the Bravos. In four starts (five appearances), Claggett is 0-2 with a 6.64 ERA (20.1 innings) with nine walks and eight strikeouts.
- Left-hander Jhonathan Ramos didn’t make an appearance this week. In four games with the Bravos he’s allowed three hits, no runs, over 2.1 innings with two walks and two strikeouts.
Leones del Caracas
- Right-hander Jose Ascanio made two appearances this week where he tossed two perfect innings of relief with two strikeouts. In five games overall, Ascanio has allowed three runs on five hits over 9.1 innings with two walks and eight strikeouts.
- Catcher Ramon Cabrera played in two games this week where he went 1-for-4 with a run, walk and a strikeout. Cabrera is batting .200 over 15 games with the Leones.
- Outfielder Corey Wimberly is on the roster for Carcas but has not yet appeared in a game.
Dominican League
Toros Del Este
- Right-hander Chris Leroux has made one start this week where he picked up the loss despite allowing any earned runs. Leroux allowed two runs (none earned) on four hits over 3.0 innings with one walk and three strikeouts. With one out in the 2nd, Alex Valdez reached base on the error by the Toros second baseman. With two outs, Leroux allowed back to back RBI hits to plate the lone two runs to score in his outing. In five starts overall, Leroux is 1-2 with a 1.14 ERA (23.2 innings) with five walks and 21 strikeouts. Leroux will make one more start before his winter ball season ends.
- Left-hander Aaron Thompson has made one appearance with the Toros this week where he no runs on three hits over 1.0 inning. In two starts (four appearances), Thompson is 0-1 with a 6.10 ERA (9.1 innings) with four walks and three strikeouts.
- Right-hander Tim Wood made two appearances from the ‘pen for the Toros this week. On Sunday, Wood allowed three runs on two hits with a walk over 0.1 innings of relief. Wood allowed a one out single, walk and another single before being replaced by Winston Abreu, who allowed a three-run triple. On Tuesday, Wood tossed a perfect inning of relief. Wood’s winter league season ends on Saturday. In 10 appearances this season, Wood has allowed 10 runs (nine earned) on 14 hits over 9.2 innings with four walks and eight strikeouts.
- Infielder Pedro Ciriaco made his winter ball debut this week with the Toros. Ciriaco went 5-for-21 (.238 avg) over five games with three runs and five strikeouts.
- Shortstop Chase d’Arnaud is still on the Toros roster, but has not played due to a hand injury. d’Arnaud is currently not in the Dominican but could return to finish out the season. In three games, d’Arnaud went 0-for-10 with three strikeouts.
- First/Third baseman Matt Hague played in five games this week. Hague went 3-for-17 (.166 avg) with one run, four RBI, three walks and three strikeouts. In 22 games overall, Hague is batting .298 with two home runs and 14 RBI.
- Third Baseman Andy Vasquez didn‘t play in any games this week for the Toros. Vasquez has played in five games with the Toros, three at-bat where he is hitless.
Leones del Escogido
- Infielder Andy Marte played in two games this week where he went 0-for-2 at the plate. Marte is batting .250 with two doubles and two RBI over 15 games for Leones. Outfielder Starling Marte has not played since November 1st and is sidelined with a groin injury. In 13 games Marte is batting .340 with eight runs, three doubles, one homer, five RBI and five stolen bases.
Panama
Diablicos de Azuero
- Outfielder Andrew Lambo is playing winter ball in Panama with the Diablicos de Azuero. Lambo has a .316 average in 20 games with six doubles, two home runs, 19 RBI and seven walks. Lambo’s 19 RBI are the most in the League.
Puerto Rico
Criollos de Caguas
- Right-hander Nelson Figuero is on the roster for Criollos but has not yet made an appearance.
Leones de Ponce
- Infielder Benji Gonzalez appeared in one game this week for Leones as a pinch-runner. Gonzalez has gone 1-for-3 with a stolen base in three games.
Indios de Mayaguez
- Infielder Jeremy Farrell played in five games this week for Indios where he’s gone 6-for-20 (.300 avg) with four runs, two doubles, three RBI and three strikeouts. Farrell is batting .267 over eight games.
- Infielder Greg Picart is on the roster for Indios but has not yet played in a game. Outfielder Adalberto Santos is on the roster for Indios but has not yet played in a game.
Australian League
Adelaide Bite
- Left-hander Rinku Singh is on the roster for Adelaide but has not yet made an appearance.
- Right-hander Ryan Beckman made his winter ball debut with Adelaide this week where he made two appearances. On Friday, Beckman tossed a perfect inning of relief with a strikeout. On Sunday, he allowed one run on two hits over 1.0 inning with two strikeouts.
- Outfielder Calvin Anderson played in three games this week where he went 3-for-12 (.364 avg) with two runs, a home run, four RBI and five strikeouts. Anderson’s lone home run was a grand slam.
Brisbane Bandits
- Outfielder Xavier Paul was involved in an identity hoax with the Brisbane Bandits this off-season. Minor League infielder Breland Brown, who was recently with the Arizona Diamondbacks system, created fake ID’s to play in the winter league as Paul. Paul found out about the hoax after reading online that he was participating in the Australian League and was contacted as to why he hadn’t arrived yet (the season started last week). Canberra Cavalry
- Catcher Travis Scott has played in four games for Canberra where he’s gone 2-for-16 (.125 avg) with three runs, two doubles, an RBI and two walks. Over seven games, Scott is batting .222.
