Here is a breakdown of how the Pirates players and prospects played in winter ball from December 3-11.
Mexican League
Vedados de Mazatlan
- Outfielder Rogelio Noris played in seven games this week. He went 3-for-13 (.231 avg) with three runs, a double, one home run, a RBI and two walks. Noris is batting .180 over 22 games with Mazatlan.
Venezuelan League
Aguilas del Zulia
- Right-hander Diego Moreno appeared in four games this week with Zulia. In his first three appearances, Moreno tossed a combined 4.2 innings of relief, allowing just two hits, no runs and five strikeouts. In his fourth appearance on Sunday, Moreno allowed one run on two hits over 1.0 inning. Over 18.2 innings in relief, Moreno has allowed six runs on 12 hits with three walks and 19 strikeouts.
- Right-hander Julio Vivas is on the roster for Aguilas but has not yet made an appearance.
Caribes de Anzoátegui
- Right-hander Gabriel Alvarado has not yet made an appearance for Anzoátegui.
- Outfielder Gorkys Hernandez played in seven games this week for Caribes. He went 4-for-24 (.167 avg) with three runs, a home run and two RBI. In 46 games overall, Hernandez is batting .208 with seven doubles, a triple, a homer, 18 runs and eight stolen bases.
- Outfielder Jose Tabata is on the roster for Anzoátegui but has not played in a game yet.
Bravos de Margarita
- Right-hander Anthony Claggett made one appearance this week for the Bravos. He allowed one run on four hits and two strikeouts over 3.1 innings of relief. In four starts (seven appearances), Claggett is 1-2 with a 6.20 ERA (24.2 innings) with nine walks and 10 strikeouts.
- Left-hander Jhonathan Ramos made one appearances this week. He retired the lone batter that he faced. In nine games with the Bravos he’s allowed four hits, two runs, over 5.1 innings with four walks and four strikeouts.
Cardenales de Lara
- Right-hander Mike Crotta made his winter ball debut this week for Cardenales. He made two appearances where he combined to toss 2.1 scoreless innings with three hits, a walk and a strikeout.
Leones del Caracas
- Right-hander Jose Ascanio made one appearance this week. He tossed 1.1 scoreless innings with one hit and a strikeout. In 10 games (two starts) overall, Ascanio has allowed six runs (five earned) on 13 hits over 18.2 innings with two walks and 15 strikeouts.
- Catcher Ramon Cabrera played in two games this week where he went 0-for-3. Cabrera is batting .179 with six runs, a double, triple, three RBI and a stolen base over 25 games with the Leones.
- Left-hander Justin Thomas made his winter ball debut this week for Leones. He made two appearances where he combined to toss 1.1 hitless innings with a walk.
- Outfielder Corey Wimberly played in six games this week where he went 2-for-8 (.250 avg) with a double, walk and three strikeouts. Over 18 games overall, Wimberly is batting .255 with three runs and six RBI.
Navegantes de Magallanes
- Outfielder Jose Osuna is on the roster for the Navegantes but has not yet appeared in a game.
Tiburones de La Guaira
- Right-hander Shairon Martis started in two games this week for the Tiburones. On the 6th, Martis allowed three runs on three hits over 5.1 innings with one walk and two strikeouts. On Sundays’ start, Martis allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit over five innings with two walks and two strikeouts. Martis is 2-2 with a 2.27 ERA over eight games (39.2 innings) with 15 walks and 27 strikeouts. Despite a solid ERA, Martis has allowed six home runs over his seven starts.
Dominican League
Toros Del Este
- Right-hander Chris Leroux’s solid season in winter ball came to a close after making his final start on November 13th. In five starts overall, Leroux went 1-2 with a 1.14 ERA with five walks and 21 strikeouts. Leroux allowed just three earned runs over 23.2 innings in his first time professionally starting since 2006 when he was with the Florida Marlins organization.
- Left-hander Aaron Thompson’s season came to a close after making his final appearance on November 9. In two starts (four appearances) this season, Thompson went 0-1 with a 6.10 ERA (9.1 innings) with four walks and three strikeouts.
- Right-hander Tim Wood made his final winter ball appearance on November 17th for the Toros. He allowed one run (unearned) on a walk and a strikeout over 1.0 inning of relief. In 11 appearances this season, Wood has allowed 11 runs (nine earned) on 14 hits over 10.2 innings with five walks and nine strikeouts.
- Shortstop Chase d’Arnaud‘s season with the Toros ended early after suffering a hand injury. In three games, d’Arnaud went 0-for-10 with three strikeouts.
- First baseman Matt Hague played in eight games for the Toros this week. Hague went 5-for-26 (.193 avg) with two runs, a double, a RBI and five walks. Hague played in his last game on Sunday. He finished the season with a .259 avg over 49 games with 15 runs, four doubles, two homers, 18 RBI and 21 walks.
- Third Baseman Andy Vasquez hasn’t played in a game for the Toros since November 4. Vasquez has played in five games with the Toros, three at-bats, where he is hitless.
- Right-hander Jose Diaz made four appearances appearances this week for the Toros. In his first two appearances, Diaz tossed 2.0 perfect innings with three strikeouts. On Friday, however, Diaz allowed two runs on a hit and a walk over 0.1 of an inning. He followed up with a scoreless outing on Sunday with two walks and a strikeout. Over 21 appearances, Diaz has a 2.33 ERA with nine walks and 18 strikeouts.
Leones del Escogido
- Infielder Andy Marte hasn‘t played in a game for Leones since November 27th. Marte is batting .206 with two doubles and two RBI over 19 games.
- Outfielder Starling Marte played in eight games this week for Leones. He went 11-for-34 (.326 avg) with seven runs, two doubles, two triples, a homer, six RBI and two stolen bases. In 25 games Marte is batting .323.
Estrellas de Oriente
- Catcher Jake Fox played in seven games this week where he went 5-for-23 (.217 avg) with three walks and nine strikeouts. Over 27 games this season, Fox is batting .222 with eight runs, seven doubles and 11 RBI.
Panama
Diablicos de Azureo
- Outfielder Andrew Lambo is playing winter ball in Panama with Diablicos. Over 30 games, Lambo is batting .333, which is fourth in the league, with 19 runs, two homers and 12 walks. He ranks second in doubles (11), first in RBI (29), third in stolen bases (6) and second in hits (39).
Puerto Rico
Criollos de Caguas
- Right-hander Nelson Figueroa made one start this week for Criollos. He allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits over 6.0 innings with two walks and three strikeouts. Three starts overall, Figueroa is 1-1 with a 2.50 ERA over 18.0 innings with six walks and 15 strikeouts.
Leones de Ponce
- Infielder Benji Gonzalez appeared in five games this week for Leones. Gonzalez went 2-for-15 (.133 avg) with two runs, a walk and three strikeouts. Over 15 games overall, Gonzalez is batting .179.
Indios de Mayaguez
- Infielder Jeremy Farrell hasn’t played in a game since November 30th. Farrell is batting .175 with four runs, four doubles and seven RBI over 19 games.
- Infielder Greg Picart is on the roster for Indios but has not yet played in a game.
- Outfielder Adalberto Santos is on the roster for Indios but has not yet played in a game.
Australian League
Adelaide Bite
- Left-hander Rinku Singh was named to the ’Team World’ in the Australian League All-Star game set to play on December 21st. He made three appearances this week. In his first two appearances, Singh tossed a combined 4.1 scoreless innings with a hit, a walk and two strikeouts. On Sunday, Singh allowed two runs on six hits over 2.0 innings with a strikeout. Overall games this season, Singh is 1-0 with a 2.00 ERA over 9.0 innings with a walk, six strikeouts and a save.
- Right-hander Ryan Beckman was also named to the ‘Team World’ in the Australian League All-Star game. Beckman and Singh were the two Pirates to get the nod. Beckman made four appearances this week. In his first two outings, Beckman combine to toss 3.0 scoreless frames with three strikeouts. On Friday, Beckman gave up just his second earned run this season over an inning of relief. On Sunday, Beckman allowed two hits over 2.0 scoreless innings with a walk and a strikeout. Overall, Beckman has allowed two earned runs on 10 hits over 13.0 innings with two walks and 13 strikeouts.
- Outfielder Calvin Anderson played in six games this week where he went 11-for-26 (.423 avg) with four runs, three doubles and two RBI. Over 19 games this season, Anderson is batting .253 with three homers and nine RBI.
- Infielder Stefan Welch is on the roster for Adelaide but has not yet made an appearance.
Canberra Cavalry
- Catcher Travis Scott has played in seven games for Canberra where he went 9-for-29 (.310 avg) with five runs, a double, home run, and a RBI. Over 19 games, Scott is batting .276 with 14 runs, seven doubles and eight RBI.
