WEST LIBERTY – The West Liberty University softball team rolled out the heavy artillery on Tuesday and swept a non-conference doubleheader from Point Park (Pa.) by scores of 4-3 and 10-8 at the WLU Softball Complex.
The Hilltoppers (4-23) played errorless ball in the opener and it paid off at the end as West Liberty pushed across a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to overcome a 3-2 deficit.
Katelynn Kumm swung the big stick for the hosts, driving in three of the four runs with a triple and a single. Kelsey Martin weighed in with a single and a double.
Sara Emerich went the distance for the win, picking up 7 strikeouts while issuing only one walk.
In the second game, Martin’s 3-run home run highlighted a 5-run Hilltopper uprising in the bottom of the fourth that put the hosts ahead to stay. Angela Johnson ignited the rally with a solo home run.
The scrappy Pioneers (10-9) battled back to close the gap to 8-7 only to see West Liberty’s Courtney Loe bang out a 2-out, 2-run single in the bottom of the sixth to close the deal.
Martin capped off a big day with 4 RBIs on a homer, double and single while Loe finished with two singles and 3 RBIs. Leanna McMillen, Maggie Starr and Felicia Hulslander all had two hits each for the Hilltoppers, who banged out a total of 13 hits in the game.
West Liberty opens a weekend WVIAC road trip on Friday afternoon with a 3 p.m. doubleheader at the University of Charleston.
