On a day where high school football practice started in West Virginia, not much happened at WVU camp while the media was allowed inside. Here’s what I did take in, though, as I watched the wide receivers, safeties, and linebackers.
Wide Receivers
– Kevin White and Ivan McCartney are both bigger than they were in the spring.
– Both White and McCartney are over 6-2, with White weighing just over 210 pounds. If these two guys can step up in the receiving core, expect big things. McCartney has been preparing mentally, getting his mind right after being dismissed from the team and being let back on. Dante Campbell and KJ Myers are both over 6-2, also.
– No real vocal leaders yet.
– While practice is going on, no receivers are really standing out in terms of being vocal and working with the other receivers.
Safeties
– This is Karl Joseph’s position.
– Joseph was constantly speaking up and helping guys with their technique during drills.
– The position isn’t very deep.
– There’s Joseph and Darwin Cook really at the safety position. Guys like Jarrod Harper, KJ Dillon, and Ricky Rumph need to come in and step up for some relief.
Linebackers
– Isaiah Bruce stands out.
– Keith Patterson was using Bruce as an example during a drill today and praised him the entire time.
– No clear cut starters, other than Bruce.
– This, like just about every other position, is full of competition. Bruce will likely anchor this group, but the coaches are still looking for someone else to step up. Jewone Snow could be one of these guys, as he looked good today.
