MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Juwan Staten, who missed 5 of 6 from the floor Saturday afternoon, sank a layup with 5 five seconds left to hand West Virginia a 68-67 victory over previously undefeated Virginia Tech.
The score by Staten, a transfer from Dayton, came 4 seconds after his shot was blocked on a similar try. The out-of-bounds ball was awarded to the Mountaineers (4-3), leading to the second chance by Staten.
Getting the ball on the baseline, he waltzed through a set of arms and legs and lofted it through the hoop.
Immediately, Virginia Tech (7-1) coach James Johnson called a timeout. The play went to the Hokies’ Erick Green, the nation’s third-leading scorer, who missed a jumper as time ran out. Green had 23 points, and Robert Brown added 21.
Kevin Noreen, a reserve, got his first double-double (14 points, 12 rebounds) for West Virginia, and Aaric Murray had 15 points.
