After losing several key play-makers from 2010, WVU’s coaching staff is looking at veteran quarterback Geno Smith to lead the young Mountaineers back into the National Spotlight.
When asked about new Coach Holgorsen Offensive Cordinator, and Head Coach in waiting, Smith said;
He’s a very laid-back guy. When we’re out there, he wants us to execute and put forth ourmaximum effort. He wants us to go full-speed at all times, and I believe that’swhat we’re doing.
A year ago, Smith threw for an impressive 2,763 yards, along with 24 touchdowns. With only 59 rushing yards, he’s not the duel threat that Pat White was, and Smith is OK with that. He is looking to separate himself from the stigma of being an “athlete” at quarterback, and show scouts that he’s a pure passing quarterback. WVU’s new offense will allow Smith to do just that.
We’re executing better than the coaches thought we would be at this time. I’m getting the rhythm down, getting more in shape and I’m feeling better out on the field. I love the new style of play.
Smith and the Mountaineers will open the season on September 3rd at home against Marshall.
