WEST LIBERTY – Trent Chapman singled up the middle to bring Mike Johnson trotting home with the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth Sunday afternoon as the West Liberty University baseball team beat Alderson-Broaddus, 5-4, at Kovalick Field.
Johnson had led off the ninth for the Hilltoppers (5-11) by doubling into the right-center gap. He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Ross Heath, setting the stage for Chapman’s walk-off hit.
Mike Reef went the distance on the mound to pick up the win, striking out two and not walking a batter while yielding only two earned runs in a strong performance.
Chapman had two singles and drove in two runs for West Liberty while Johnson had a single to go along with his ninth-inning double. Ryan Zelinski chipped in with a double, single and RBI while Derek Daugherty also had a double and single.
The Hilltoppers return to action Wednesday at 1 p.m. when they host Salem International in a non-conference doubleheader.
